Passenger car driver killed in crash with construction dump truck on Bangerter Highway

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah, June 7, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — The driver of a small passenger car was killed in South Jordan Wednesday night after she was hit broadside by a construction dump truck carrying 12 tons of concrete.

The accident happened about 10 p.m. at the intersection of Bangerter Highway and 9800 South.

Witnesses told police the truck was southbound on Bangerter when it drove through the intersection and plowed into the driver’s side of an eastbound Subaru hatchback.

The driver of the Subaru — identified at Samantha Hawkins, 31 — was gravely injured and passed away at the scene despite the efforts of first responders to save her life.

South Jordan Police Sgt. Sam Winkler told Gephardt Daily that investigators were looking into witness accounts that the driver of the dump truck ran the red light.

Winkler also said it had yet to be determined if impairment was a factor in the crash.

The driver of the dump truck was said to be cooperating with police.

At least two cars were damaged by flying debris during the accident. There were no other reports of injuries.
