Pilot Seriously Injured in Hurricane Plane Crash
HURRICANE, UTAH- May 30, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – Officers and medical personnel were dispatched to a report of plane that had crashed in the area of 2050 S. 800 West in Hurricane at approximately 10:49 a.m. This area is just north of the Hurricane Airport. Sgt. Brandon Buell of the Hurricane Police Department said witnesses reported seeing this plane, which is an experimental plane, take off from the Hurricane Airport and make two circles in the area and then go down in the area reported. He said it appeared the plane was having mechanical problems which caused the engine to stall. The pilot was attempting to land at the airport from the north. The plane went down in a field, hitting a fence and traveling approximately 150 feet before stopping.
The pilot, a 62-year-old male, was the only occupant in the plane. He sustained serious injuries, a laceration to his head and possible fracture to his leg. He was transported by ambulance to DRMC, by Hurricane Valley Fire Department.
The plane has extensive damages and appears to be totaled.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway and the FAA has been notified.
