SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 13, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — An alleged pipe bomb found inside a vehicle Wednesday afternoon has been found to not be an explosive device.

Charlie Roberts, spokesman for the Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division said the item found inside the purse of a woman arrested in a vehicle is not an explosive.

The incident started when an officer with the Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division noticed a vehicle headed down Redwood Road near 1300 South at a high rate of speed around 1:30 p.m. and pulled the car over after it came back as possibly stolen.

A man and a woman inside the car were placed in handcuffs and as the car was searched, they found an item that looked like a pipe bomb.

The officer then backed away and called in additional help and the bomb squad.

After the robot removed the item, it was determined to be a piece of plastic with black duct tape around it and little baggies, usually used in drug distribution, inside.

It was later discovered that the couple had borrowed the car from a friend of theirs who did not have permission from the owner to let them use it. The owner had called police saying the vehicle was not in the custody of the person he let use it.

Redwood Rd. from California Ave. (1300 South) to Indiana Ave. (850 South) in both directions was temporarily closed but has since reopened and the two individuals were released from custody with misdemeanor citations.
