OGDEN, Utah, Nov. 2, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — What remained of the Farmers’ Grain Co-op, a towering landmark on Ogden’s westside since 1941, was reduced to rubble in planned explosions Saturday morning.
At its peak, the structure served as a vital grain storage facility for about 2,000 grain farmers in Utah and southern Idaho. Built in 1941, it could store 500,000 bushels of grain in 49 silos, according to historical accounts.
But over the decades, times — and the needs of farmers — changed. The local economy diversified, and remaining farmers made other storage arrangements more convenient to their locations. Long after the operation closed, the land became more valuable for other uses.
Demolition became a priority, with part of the structure removed earlier this year, and the last remaining towers coming down Saturday. Roads were closed, and a group of spectators observed from a safe distance away.
A technical issue caused the planned explosion to become a two-part operation, finally completed at about 9:15 a.m.
