SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Dec. 23, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — The Weber County Sheriff’s Office has shared a news release from the Utah Poison Control Center, warning people about a product labeled as “CBD” oil being sold in area smoke shops.

According to the release, “Preliminary analysis of the product labeled as CBD-oil … which was purchased from a local smoke shop, is not CBD, but rather a synthetic cannabinoid-like compound,” which is similar to, or may be, “spice.”

The release states that since early November, the poison control center has received numerous calls reporting people becoming ill after using the oil.

Adverse effects included altered mental status, seizures, confusion, loss of consciousness and slurred speech.

CBD oil does not produce these symptoms.

According to the release, cannabidiol (CBD) is a component of the marijuana plant that does not get a person high.

The situation is being investigated by several agencies, including the Utah State Bureau of Investigation.

The poison control center is advising people to discard products labeled as CBD oil purchased at local smoke shops.

Anyone who is experiencing adverse reactions following inhalation or ingestion of CBD or hemp oil is encouraged to contact the poison control center at 800-222-1222.
