WEST JORDAN, Utah, Nov. 12, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Unified Police officials have taken two men and one woman into custody after officers said the three fled an attempted home burglary, backed their escape vehicle into a police car, then nearly hit an officer as they pulled forward to escape.

The incident began just after 1 p.m. Monday in Kearns, Sgt. Melody Gray, Unified Police Department, said.

“We received a call of a burglary in progress,” Gray said. “The homeowner saw people in his home and called police. As officers arrived, they observed the Cadillac here, in the road, and there was someone inside sitting, waiting.

“One of our officers got out and challenged them, at gunpoint, as another officer was arriving behind them,” Gray said. “The people inside the house ran out, got into the car, backed up and hit the police vehicle behind it, then drove toward one of our officers. We engaged in a pursuit after that.”

It ended a short while later in West Jordan, at 7125 S. 1100 West, “where the Cadillac, as you can see, hit a fence and ran through some stuff,” Gray said.

All three suspects fled. Two were captured quickly, and the third “got down into the canal and tried that route of escape,” she said. “It is really cold and wet.”

All three will be charged with aggravated burglary, aggravated assault of a police officer and fleeing at least, Gray said.

The homeowner could find nothing missing from his residence, Gray said. No officers sustained injuries. The officer targeted by the fleeing Cadillac was able to jump out of the way, she said.

Additional agencies helped in the case, she said. The names of the suspects in custody have not yet been released.
