MURRAY, Utah, Jan. 17, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Police have arrested a fugitive in Murray, as well as a second man at the site who slashed the tire of a Metro Gang Unit member in his car as part of the undercover operation.

Lt. Paul Barker with the Unified Police Department told Gephardt Daily the Metro Gang Unit had information the fugitive was at a residence in the area of 1300 East and 6400 South. Officers went to that area at approximately 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, Barker said.

“They were in the area holding surveillance and they observed the suspect park a car which turned out to be a stolen car,” Barker said. “A pedestrian then left the house, came walking by one of the surveillance cars and slashed the tire of one of the Metro Gang detectives’ vehicles.”

That spurred a response from UPD, Cottonwood Heights Police and Murray Police Department, who joined the Metro Gang Unit on scene Barker said.

“We contained the house, had K-9 searching, and there is a detached shed on the property and we had some information the suspects might be inside there,” Barker said. “We made contact and there were four people inside the shed that came out, including the primary fugitive that the Metro Gang Unit was hunting for, who has an adult probation and parole violation.”

That suspect has been identified as Jayce Tipelio, 28. He is also known as Jayce Kane-Fiaui.

They also took the man who slashed the tire in custody, and officials are interviewing and running warrants on the other people, and obtaining a search warrant for the house. In addition, there were two stolen cars on the property, which were recovered.

Barker added that he wasn’t sure what the intent of the suspect that slashed the tire was, but said it certainly caught the attention of officials.

“He brought more attention on this house with multiple agencies responding,” he added. “We took it as it a threat to us, that someone is coming at one of our vehicles with a knife, and we are going to respond accordingly.”
