SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 2, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A 49-year-old Salt Lake City man died Wednesday evening after the car he was working on reportedly fell off a jack and crushed him.

Police have identified the man as Mario Perez, according to a news release from the Salt Lake City Police Department.

The incident happened near 1700 W. Kimberly Circle (460 North) just before 6 p.m., according to SLCPD Detective Robert Ungricht.

Perez was working on a Volkswagen Passat, Ungricht said, when something went wrong with the jack and the car fell on him and pinned him. Neighbors found him and lifted the car off the man, Ungricht said.

Police believe at this point the jack either failed or slipped out, but exact details are not yet available. Investigators arrived and photographed the scene. Foul play is not suspected.

Perez was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in extremely critical condition, and was subsequently pronounced dead.

It is not yet clear whether Perez lived in the neighborhood or was visiting there.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
