CLEARFIELD, Utah, Nov. 15, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Police say a Clearfield man who lives with his mother threatened to shoot her and himself with an AK47 after a verbal argument about living conditions in the home.
The Clearfield Police Department received multiple 911 calls at about 9:50 p.m. Tuesday reporting shots fired in the area of 2390 S. 599 West. Calls that followed reported a woman screaming, then being carried into the house by a man.
An additional call came from a woman who told dispatchers her boyfriend was inside the residence, and had discharged a high-powered rifle.
Officers arrived and were able to communicate through the girlfriend, and the male surrendered shortly thereafter. The suspect has been identified as 42-year-old Kevin Morris.
According to a news release from the Clearfield Police Department, the suspect, Morris, resides in the home with his mother. After the argument, the mother reportedly was in her bedroom when she heard a knock, and opened the door to find her son holding the AK47 to his chin and threatening to kill them both.
The news release said that the mother walked toward the kitchen, and Morris asked her to watch him kill himself. When she turned toward her son, he pointed the gun at his mother, the CPD statement said. Morris then discharged at least one round into the floor of the residence.
When his mother attempted to run onto the porch, Morris dragged her back into the residence by her hair, the news release said. The mother went to her bedroom, afraid, then jumped from the second-floor window, according to the police account. She suffered injuries to her legs and feet, but attempted to walk to a neighbor’s home, the police account said. Morris reportedly left the residence and carried his mother back inside.
Morris communicated with his girlfriend on social media, according to the police statement. That is when she contacted police and helped them to get Morris to surrender.
After obtaining a warrant, Clearfield officers searched the home and found several firearms and drug paraphernalia. Morris was booked into the Davis County Jail after being charged with kidnapping, a first-degree felony; aggravated assault, a third-degree felony; discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony; criminal mischief, a class B misdemeanor; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor.
Morris’ mother was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.
