SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 12, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Police say three people were injured when a speeding SUV ran a red light and crashed into a vehicle Sunday evening in Salt Lake City’s Foothill/Sunnyside neighborhood.

The investigation began just before 5 p.m. when emergency dispatchers received multiple calls about a two-car crash at the intersection of 1300 South and 2100 East, Salt Lake City police said in a news release.

Police say a Toyota SUV was traveling west on 1300 South when it ran a red light and crashed into a subcompact Audi SUV headed south on 2100 East. The crash pushed the Audi into a nearby parking lot, according to police.

The Salt Lake City fire crews and paramedics arrived and found two men injured inside the Audi. Both men were transported to an area hospital — one with critical and potentially life-threatening injuries, and the other with serious injuries, police said.

The Toyota SUV came to a stop approximately 100 yards west of the intersection, according to police. Witnesses told police the driver got out of the SUV and attempted to run away.

“Community members stopped the man and held him down until officers arrived and took him into custody,” the news release says.

The driver of the Toyota was taken to an a hospital with serious injuries.

“The debris field and trajectory of both SUVs indicate that speed played a role in this crash,” the release says.

The crash temporarily closed 1300 South from 2100 East to Sheridan Road, and 2100 East from 1300 South to Sherman Avenue, police said.
