SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah, March 3, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A flurry of calls came to 911 late Friday night from the area of 3480 S. 300 East.

But each caller seemed to describe a different emergency.

“We first got numerous calls at 3480 South 300 East. It came in as possibly a domestic, shots fired, car crash — so it was a whole jumbled mess of things coming in,” said Sgt. Darren Carr, South Salt Lake Police Department.

When officers arrived after the initial 10:35 p.m. call, “they found out that a person, a male, had kicked in a door, and another male, inside, had shot him.”

Officers were told the dispute involved a female.

“A  male that was involved with that female went to the door, wanted in for whatever reason,” Carr said. “No one was going to open the door, so he decided to kick it in, and when he kicked it in, there was another younger male that lived there with his grandfather that confronted him with a gun and fired a couple times. One round hit the person taken to the hospital in the leg.”

That man, the alleged door kicker, was listed in critical condition, but was expected to survive, Carr said. He will be booked into jail after his release.

The suspected shooter, who was about 28 and lived at the apartment with his grandfather, left the scene, Carr said.

“The shooter fled the scene, so we haven’t had a chance to talk to him, to hear his side of the story. We don’t have the full story right now. We do have a witness that was inside the apartment, that’s the shooter’s grandfather, but we don’t have the story from the actual shooter.”

After the shooting came the car crash.

“As they were leaving, a female was driving a car and she was intoxicated, and came around the corner, and plowed into these three cars here, in an attempt to get the guy that was shot to the hospital,” Carr said.

“Somehow she made it to the IMC, so she’s been arrested on DUI,” Carr said. Her vehicle, a Chevy Lumina, “sustained heavy damage,” he added. “I’m actually surprised it made it the whole way there.”

“It was a bit of a wild story.”
