DRAPER, Utah, Jan. 30, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A Draper man has been charged with child abuse, domestic violence and assault after a Tuesday morning altercation initially reported to police as a home invasion by an unknown man.
Police responded to the Draper residence, near 1600 E. Pioneer Road, at about 5:30 a.m. Officers found a 15-year-old boy who had been stabbed multiple times in the shoulders and once in his neck, near his carotid artery, according to a probable cause statement.
The teen told officers that he attacked the unknown man, who was dressed in black, after finding him in his sister’s room, and the stranger then stabbed him and attacked his stepfather, Richard Wayne Hurley, 38, the boy told police.
Also in the home were the boy’s mother and his siblings, who are ages 10, 6 and 2, the probable cause statement says. The mother and other children left the residence and declined to speak with police, the statement says.
A containment field was set up, but no evidence of an intruder was found.
Once at Intermountain Medical Center, Richard Hurley said he did not recall what happened and refused to give a statement.
At that point, the teen admitted to officers that Hurley has been drunk and had become angry with his wife, the boy’s mother.
Hurley began a physical altercation with the mother, the teen told police. The teen stepped in to stop the fight, and was able to do so, he told investigators.
The teenage boy said Hurley began another physical altercation with the mother a short time later, and the teen again tried to intervene, but Hurley had some scissors in his hand by that point, and used them to stab the teen, he told police.
The boy said he was able to bring Hurley under control a second time before police and medical crews were summoned.
Draper police obtained a search warrant, and found a large amount of blood and a pair of scissors. At about 9:30 a.m., police alerted the media that the original story released had been “bogus.”
Hurley was charged with:
- Child abuse, a third-degree felony
- Three counts of domestic violence in the presence of a child, a Class A misdemeanor
- And assault, a Class A misdemeanor
