TAYLORSVILLE, Utah, Dec. 12, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Unified Police officials announced Tuesday night that they have a person of interest in custody in connection with the homicide of Toussaint Tyler, who was shot at about 10:10 a.m. Sunday and later died in the hospital.

Unified Police detectives also served a search warrant at 1475 Gillespie Ave. on Tuesday afternoon.

Tyler, who was about 30 years old, was shot in a ground floor unit at the Fairstone at Riverview Apartments, 742 W. Sunny River Road (4330 South), Building 11.

UPD has confirmed that the person in custody is the female who was shown on surveillance video, knocking on the door of Tyler’s apartment.

The suspects were described as:

  • A short Hispanic man, between 20 and 30 years old, with light brown eyes, wearing a black coat or jacket and black construction-style pants, such as Carhartt.
  • A tall black man, about 40 years old, wearing a similar outfit to the other male suspect. The second man was also wearing a black beanie.
  • A female wearing a black and red hoodie and light colored pants. Officials released a surveillance photo of her (see below) on Sunday.

In the course of the investigation, officers learned the female suspect knocked on the door while the two male suspects waited around the corner, according to a UPD news release. Once the door was opened the two male suspects forced their way inside. The female did not enter the apartment.

At some point, one of the suspects shot the victim, then both fled with the female and ran east.

UPD Detective Jared Richardson said no weapon was found inside the apartment. Tyler lived in the apartment, but Richardson said it wasn’t clear if he was the owner or main renter, or a roommate. When Tyler was shot, there were three other adults in the apartment.

The UPD tweeted Sunday evening the suspect vehicle is thought to be a 1980s black Ford Mustang convertible. The vehicle has red stripes going down the sides, paint flaking off with primer showing through and  low-profile tires which extend past the fender with gold rims.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Unified Police Department at 801-743-7000.
