SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah, June 29, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Police are investigating an aggravated assault that occurred late Friday night in the area of Mountain Shadows Apartments in South Salt Lake.

Police were called to the scene, near 3883 S. 700 West, just after 11 p.m. on a report of shots fired in the area.

Sgt. Ryan Cram, South Salt Lake Police Department, said there was a confrontation between a group of males and a male victim, all young adults. Cram said the victim and the suspects didn’t know each other.

Some members of the group grabbed some “large gravel-sized rocks” and began throwing them at the victim, striking him in the back of the head, Cram told Gephardt Daily.

As the confrontation escalated, one of the group pulled out a gun and fired off more than one round, Cram said.

“Fortunately, no one was injured” by the gunfire, he added.

The suspects then fled the scene.

Cram said it is still very early in the investigation and too soon to know if the incident is gang-related.

Gephardt Daily will update this developing story as more information is released.
