SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 6, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Police are investigating an auto-pedestrian accident that occurred Tuesday night after officers were dispatched on a call for a “welfare check.”
Lt. Manfred Lassig, of the Unified Police Department, said officers were dispatched at 10:51 p.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting a person lying on the ground in the area of 3304 S. 2300 East.
That location includes a parking lot, Lassig said, and as the UPD officers drove through the area, trying to locate the individual in the dark, “one of the UPD cars drove over the person, and the person died of the injuries.”
Police from Salt Lake City, Murray and Draper were called to the scene, where they remained as the investigation got underway. Salt Lake City Police Department is handling the investigation.
The officer who was driving the vehicle is now on “standard administrative leave until the investigation gets further along,” Lassig said.
No information has been released regarding the identity of the deceased individual, and it isn’t yet known why the person was lying on the ground.
