SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Sept. 15, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — An altercation ended with a man being fatally shot early Saturday morning in a parking garage in downtown Salt Lake City.

The incident occurred shortly after 1 a.m.

Lt. Scott Smalley, Salt Lake City Police Department, said it’s still very early in the investigation and there aren’t a lot of details, but it appears that an altercation that started in a popular bar called Wasted Space, at 324 S. State St., carried over into a parking garage.

“At some point in that altercation, shots were fired, fatally wounding one individual,” Smalley said, later adding that the victim was male. “Right now, we’re interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence.”

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Smalley said witnesses are being cooperative, and police are canvassing the area for any surveillance video that may have captured the shooting.

“It sounds like more than two people were involved,” Smalley said, “but with all the people out tonight, it’s hard to say exactly who was involved.”

He had no information as to whether the victim and his assailant were asked to leave the bar, or if they decided to leave on their own.

When asked if any details were available describing the suspect or suspects, or if a gun had been found, Smalley declined to comment, saying only that investigators were on scene and interviewing witnesses.

“If anyone saw how this kicked off, we encourage them to call Salt Lake City Police at 801-799-3000,” he added.
