SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah, Nov. 11, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — South Salt Lake police responded to reports of a fight that escalated into a shooting at a popular night spot just before the bar’s 1 a.m. Sunday closing time.

Gary Keller, spokesman for South Salt Lake Police Department, said a fight broke out at Scallywags, 3040 State St.

“It began as a fist fight. One patron involved in the fist fight is in the hospital. He has some serious injuries,” Keller said.

Scallywags’ security people escorted the other offending patrons out of the building.

“Once out in the parking lot, another fight erupted,” Keller said. He said a glass was thrown.

“At that point, a couple individuals went to their vehicle, grabbed an assault rifle and a handgun,” Keller said.

Shots were fired into the crowd of people, and a woman is now in critical condition in a local hospital with gunshot wounds.

A man was transported to the hospital in serious condition due to injuries caused during the fight.

Police stopped a vehicle that was leaving the bar and have detained four individuals.

Keller said the investigation into this incident will probably continue well into the morning.

Referring to the crowd that was present when the shooting started, Keller said, “It’s amazing that more people weren’t injured.”

Gephardt Daily will update this developing story as more information becomes available.
