Police investigating after inmate death at Salt Lake Metro Jail

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah, Aug. 8, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Police are investigating after a prisoner at the Salt Lake County Metro Jail died after an altercation with another inmate.

A news release from Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office public information officer Sgt. Kevin Hunter identifies the deceased inmate as Daniel Lamont Davis, 38.

The incident occurred at the jail at 3415 S. 900 West at about 8 a.m. Saturday, the statement says.

“Daniel Davis and another prisoner engaged in an altercation in one of the Metro Jail’s housing units,” the statement says.

“The housing deputy took immediate action and intervened in the altercation. Jail nursing staff along with deputies rendered first aid to Davis prior to transport to the hospital by ambulance where he later died from the injuries sustained in the altercation.”

A follow-up news release from the South Salt Lake City Police Department, which is handling the investigation into the incident, said the altercation was a fist fight. The fight left Davis in critical condition.

Davis was pronounced dead just after 7:30 p.m. the same day.

The name of the other inmate involved in the altercation is being withheld until
the case is screened by the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office.

Video of the incident will not be released due to the ongoing investigation.

“Sheriff Rosie Rivera and the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office offers condolences to the family of Daniel Davis,” the statement from the Sheriff’s Office says.
