SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah, Oct. 17, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) – Police investigators in Utah County are providing limited information in the aftermath of a Thursday afternoon traffic stop that triggered an officer-involved shooting, sending a man to the hospital with unspecified injuries.
The incident began to unfold just before 3 p.m., when officers from Saratoga Springs stopped a black Mercedes on Harvest Hills Boulevard just east of Providence Drive.
According to Saratoga Springs spokesperson AnnElise Harrison, as officers “interacted with the driver, it became apparent there were some outstanding warrants on the gentleman.
“At some point, there were some shots fired. We don’t know who, by whom, or why,” Harrison said.
The driver then fled the scene, heading east on Harvest Hills Boulevard to Redwood Road, according to Harrison. He then “fled the vehicle on foot, heading west, back up into the neighborhood.”
Officers from other police departments joined in search efforts, “and the state provided a helicopter that was able to see the suspect was hiding along a canal that runs along the south side of that neighborhood. The suspect was detained and is in custody,” Harrison said. “The suspect did have some injuries and was transported via ground ambulance to a hospital in Murray.
“A female passenger, who was in the vehicle, was also detained for questioning,” she said.
Harrison told Gephardt Daily a joint task force, led by the Orem Police Department, is investigating the shooting.
Gephardt Daily will update this story when more information is made available.
