Police Looking for Suspects in Shooting at South Salt Lake Maverick

Shooting at South Salt Lake Maverick

SOUTH SALT LAKE, UTAH – July 31, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – South Salt Lake Police are investigating a shooting at a convenience store early Friday morning between four men they say appeared to know each other.

According to Sgt. Gary Keller, South Salt Lake Police, two men in a dark-colored Toyota passenger car were parked at the Maverick at 3300 S. West Temple and talking outside the car when two men, who were on foot, approached them.

“The store’s surveillance footage shows the men making eye contact and then they walked right up to each other,” said Keller. “The men definitely knew each other and there was an immediate heated discussion before one of the men who was on foot pulled a gun and fired three shots at the victims.”

The footage then goes blank for a split second and when it comes back police said the suspects were fleeing on foot and the victims left in the Toyota.

Sgt. Keller said that when officers arrived at the scene they found three shell casings and blood. “We are certain someone was injured by the bullet,” said Keller. “There was enough blood that we know it was significant but we are not sure at this time who was actually shot.”

Investigators also said it is possible the Toyota was hit as well and may have bullet holes in it.

“We are just trying to figure out what went happened and who was involved in the shooting,” said Keller. “We also noticed there was a light colored Mercedes parked at the Maverick at the same time and we are trying to locate the occupants of that car to see if they can add anything to the investigation.”

Originally when the police first arrived and after talking to the clerk, they thought the Mercedes that was parked there could have been involved and put out an attempt to locate on the vehicle. “Officers in West Valley noticed a similar Mercedes and pulled them over to identify if they were the suspects,” said Keller. “The passenger of that car got out an ran and was immediately caught by police. The passenger had a gun on him but it was not the one used in the shooting. He was subsequently arrested on other charges.”

It was determined that the occupants of that car were not involved in the incident and police are still looking for the Mercedes that was there, saying they just want to see if they witnessed what happened and may be able to help identify any of the suspects or the victims.

The only description police have at this time is they all appeared to be in their 20’s. The camera’s footage is not clear enough to see what they were wearing or any other description.

Sgt. Keller is asking for anyone with information to call South Salt Lake dispatch at 801-840-4000. “We want to remind others that all calls are anonymous and their identities will not be revealed,” he said.
