Police make arrest in apartment homicide in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Sept. 22, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City Police have announced an arrest in the homicide of Eric Padilla, the 18-year-old man who was shot and killed at a Salt Lake City apartment complex on Sept. 17.

The suspect has been identified as Landon Kavani Johnson, 20.

Johnson is charged with one count each of aggravated robbery and murder, both felonies, and a misdemeanor charge of failure to appear on a citation.

Johnson was arrested at about 5 p.m. today, according to SLCPD Lt. Robin Heiden. Heiden said she believes he was taken into custody without incident.

Police have stated that Johnson was found to be in possession of items taken during the home invasion robbery at the Sky Harbor Apartments near 1820 West and North Temple. It was previously not made public that the incident was a home invasion.

The victim was reported to have been visiting a friend who lives at the apartment complex.

At about 9 p.m. Sept. 17, officers were called to the Sky Harbor Apartments. SLCPD Detective Cody Lougy said that when police arrived, they found Eric Padilla dead with a bullet wound to the head.

According to Lougy, the victim was inside the apartment with another man when he answered a knock at the door and was shot by an unknown assailant.

The other man inside the residence was not injured.
