UPDATE: Unified Police Release Updated Account Of Officer’s Killing

HOLLADAY, Utah – Jan 17, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) The Unified Police Department released an updated account of the Sunday morning ambush that claimed the life of Officer Doug Barney.

Barney, 44, and fellow UPD officer, Jon Richey, 51, were investigating an auto accident in Holladay on Sunday morning when they reportedly were ambushed by 31-year-old Cory Lee Henderson.

Barney was fatally wounded in the attack. Richey was seriously injured with gunshot wounds to his lower extremities.

Unified Police Department Officer Killed in the Line of Duty 

LOCATION:    2167 E. 4500 S. Holladay, UT

DATE:             1/17/16  9:51a.m.

OFFICER KILLED:  Douglas Scott Barney, 44 years old, an 18-year veteran of law enforcement 

OFFICER WOUNDED:  Jon Richey, 51 years old. Shot once that went through his legs. 

SUSPECT: Cory Lee Henderson 31 years of age. Died at the scene.           

Holladay City ─ At 9:51 a.m. today a Unified Police Department (UPD) officer observed a traffic accident at the intersection of 4500 S. 2300 East, in Holiday. The officer observed two people walking away from the wreck and was informed by witnesses that they had fled from one of the involved vehicles. Additional officers responded to assist with the traffic accident and search for the suspects who had fled.

Officer Douglas Barney located the male suspect in the area of 4400 S. Lynne Lane.  At this location, Officer Barney was shot by the suspect. 

At 9:58 a.m. an officer called over the radio that an officer had been shot and was down. Additional officers responded to that area and located the suspect at 2167 E. 4500 South at about 10:01 a.m.  At this location there was an exchange of gunfire with the officers and the suspect. During this exchange, Officer Jon Richey was also shot.  As officers returned fire they shot the suspect, Cory Henderson.  Henderson passed away at the scene.

Officers Barney and Richey were transported to Intermountain Medical Center. Officer Barney was in extremely critical condition and Officer Richey was in serious condition.  Officer Barney passed away as a result of his injuries at about 1:12 p.m. at the hospital. Officer Richey is still in the hospital, and his condition is improving. 

Detectives are still searching for a female who was with Henderson in the car at the time of the crash.  There is a very limited description of this female. She is described as Caucasian with blond hair. We are asking if anyone has information about this female to call 801-799-3000. 

This case is being investigated by the Salt Lake City Police Department and Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office as part of the Officer Involved Critical Incident Protocol. 

We appreciate the support from the community as we work through this tragic loss. As funeral plans are available they will be released.
