Police: Murder charges filed after man shoots acquaintance in St. George

ST. GEORGE, Utah, Aug. 15, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A man has been charged with murder in the shooting death of an acquaintance in St. George.

Police responded at about 6:50 p.m. Wednesday on a report of shots fired, and transported the victim to the hospital, where he later died, St. George Sgt. Tiffany Adkins told Gephardt Daily.

Nicanor Vasquez-Mendoza, 31, was arrested early Thursday morning on suspicion of:

  • Murder
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Aggravated assault with a weapon
  • Possession of drugs — distribute
  • Possession of a weapon category 2
  • Possession of a weapon while under the influence
  • Five counts of witness tampering

Arrested with Vasquez-Mendoza was his girlfriend, 26-year-old Sylvia G. Lopez, who was booked into jail on suspicion of five counts of witness tampering.

The name of the victim has not yet been released.

Adkins said when officers arrived on scene near 300 North and 2700 East, “there was one person in the room, one person shot in the head,” Adkins said. “He was transported to the hospital, and later passed away.

Police interviewed Vasquez-Mendoza, and “found he was the one that shot victim,” Adkins said.

Vasquez-Mendoza and Lopez knew the victim, and had been “hanging out,” Adkins said.
