OGDEN, Utah, Feb. 2, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — An Ogden man was booked into jail Saturday after his wife reported he was making threats to use an ax, then the suspect reportedly threatened arriving officers with a beating.

Cory David Johnson, 38, has been booked into the Weber County Jail on suspicion of:

  • Assault on a peace officer, a class A misdemeanor
  • Interfering with an officer, a class B misdemeanor
  • Assault, a class B misdemeanor
  • Criminal mischief, a class B misdemeanor
  • Intoxication, a class C misdemeanor

“The victim reported her husband was threatening with an ax,” says a probable cause statement filed by an officer of the Ogden City Police Department.

“Upon police arrival, Cory Johnson came out from the side of the house threatening to ‘beat’ the officer’s ‘ass.’ He balled up his fists and tried to punch two officers. Myself and the other officer were able to get Cory to the ground, but he refused all commands to stop fighting.”

Johnson attempted to stand up with the two officers still on top of him, the statement says.

“We were struggling to get his hands under control and keep him down on the ground. I had to deliver multiple strikes before he was subdued and placed in handcuffs.

“The victim advised me he (Cory Johnson) was intoxicated and threatening to destroy the house with an ax. She never saw the ax and she was not threatened with it. He was balling up his fists and following her around yelling and throwing things around the house. She was scared he was going to hurt her and called police.”

Ogden police saw items strewn about in the kitchen, the statement says.

“The ax was in the basement, where he had been striking chunks out of the brick wall,” the statement says. “I could smell the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Cory’s mouth. He had made the comment that he was ‘drunk.’ His speech was slurred and thick tongued. His eyes were bloodshot and glassy.”

Officers determined that Johnson “was a danger to himself and others, due to the level of his intoxication and his conduct,” the statement says.

Johnson is being held in lieu of paying $4,600 bail.
