SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Nov. 3, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Police from multiple agencies are investigating after a Salt Lake City Police officer fired a gun while attempting to take a man into custody.

The incident happened just after 2 p.m. Saturday when an SLCPD officer located a man wanted for aggravated sexual assault of a child, according to information from SLCPD Sgt. Brandon Shearer.

When the officer attempted to take the wanted man into custody, Shearer said, “the officer got into an altercation with the suspect at one point, and the officer discharged his weapon.”

It is unclear at this time whether the officer or the suspect was hit by the bullets.

The suspect then fled the scene in a vehicle.

Shearer said the suspect’s vehicle was located near a residence in Millcreek, and police established a containment around the house. A SWAT team was called to the scene.

“Unified Police officers cleared the home,” Shearer said, “but the suspect wasn’t located. It’s unknown where he is at this time.”

The SLCPD officer will be questioned regarding the incident, and the Unified Police Department will conduct an investigation in keeping with protocol.

Shearer said the search for the suspect continues, but it isn’t known whether he is still in the area. Police are not releasing his name at the present time.

“Anyone who sees anything suspicious should call 911,” Shearer said.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this story as information becomes available.
