S. Jordan house set on fire after domestic incident, suspect pulled from basement of burning home

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah, Aug. 3, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — South Jordan Police and Fire Department were at the scene of what officials are calling a deliberately set fire on Yorkshire Drive. The Friday night blaze apparently was connected with an earlier incident at the same location.

Lt. Matt Pennington, with the South Jordan Police Department, told Gephardt Daily that police got a report late Friday morning of a domestic incident that had occurred Thursday night at 9854 S. Yorkshire Drive (4180 South).

The parties involved were “a daughter and a girlfriend, along with an adult male,” Pennington said.

“As a result of that investigation, we recovered an unknown amount of, I believe, marijuana out of the garage, and our suspect (the adult male) wasn’t home this morning,” Pennington said.

About 8:15 p.m. Friday, the call came in about a house fire at the Yorkshire Drive home.

The adult male had called in just prior to the call about the house fire, Pennington said, possibly because the police had been trying to contact him throughout the day.

“When we arrived, the daughter and girlfriend were not home, luckily,” he said.

“There was a fire set on the main floor of the residence. The suspect apparently attempted to harm himself and was located down in the basement in stable condition.”

Pennington said the man, who had “superficial cuts” to both arms, was taken into custody and transported to the hospital.

“The fire department was not far away and was able to put out the fire without too many issues. No one else was injured, ” Pennington said.

As a precaution, for everyone’s safety, the police went into the home with long guns, in case anyone else inside posed a threat. The only person in the residence, though, was the male suspect in the basement.

A robot also was sent in first so that officers wouldn’t have to be searching through the fire and smoke. Pennington pointed out that the smoke outside was quite heavy, despite the fire being confined to the first floor of the home.

Officials expect Yorkshire Drive to be closed from Skye Drive to 10200 South through midnight, while the scene is cleared.
