Police seek driver in South Salt Lake auto-pedestrian crash that killed 1 man, critically injured another

SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah, March 10, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Police are investigating a hit-and-run auto-pedestrian accident in which one man was killed and another critically injured late Saturday night.

The fatal crash occurred at about 11:45 p.m. in the intersection of 3300 South and Main Street.

Executive Officer Gary Keller, South Salt Lake Police Department, said it appears the two men were crossing from north to south and were in the crosswalk.

“I understand at this time that the light changed while they were in the intersection, and a car came through and struck them,” Keller said.

“There’s a lot of debris in the road — they were carrying a lot of their belongings with them,” he added.

One victim was pronounced deceased at a local hospital. The other man was transported to an area trauma center.

Keller said the driver did not stop, and police are looking for a dark-colored Chevy Trailblazer as the suspect vehicle.

The Salt Lake County Major Accident team was on scene, along with South Salt Lake police, and 3300 South and Main was closed to eastbound traffic, “so pretty much half the intersection is blocked,” Keller said.

Although westbound traffic was proceeding through the intersection, Keller said officials would be at the accident scene for a few more hours and he advised drivers to avoid the immediate area.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information that could help police locate the driver is asked to call the dispatch center at 801-840-4000.
