MIDVALE, Utah, March 25, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Police are searching for a vehicle whose occupant or occupants may have witnessed a shooting that occurred in the parking lot of the Copperview Recreation Center in Midvale March 17.

The shooting happened near the skate park at the recreation center at 8446 S. Harrison St. at approximately 8 p.m., the Unified Police Department said in a news release.

A 20-year-old man died as a result of the shooting and officials initially believed he had committed suicide, Detective Ken Hansen told Gephardt Daily. His body was transported to the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner.

The medical examiner determined the man may not have actually committed suicide, and the shooting may have been a homicide, Hansen said.

Detectives found surveillance footage that showed an older black Nissan Altima parked in the same area as the truck where the man’s body was found.

“Surveillance footage caught a vehicle, possibly a black Nissan Altima similar to the one in the photo at the skate park at the time of the shooting,” the news release said. “This vehicle has not yet been identified nor have the occupants as the video quality is poor.”

Hansen said officials do not believe that the Nissan’s occupant or occupants were involved with the shooting, but that they may have witnessed the incident.

“If you have any information on someone who has a similar vehicle that was at the skate park on the date and time of the shooting, or who may have been in this vehicle, please contact police,” the news release said.

Officials are also asking that anyone who was a witness to any portion of the incident or who has any information about the incident, contact the Unified Police Department on 801-743-7000 (non-emergency dispatch).
