Police: Suspect who admitted shooting South Jordan roommate identified

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah, Oct. 5, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A South Jordan man has been booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of the attempted murder of his roommate.

Steven Roger Madison, 58, faces charges of:

  • Murder, a first-degree felony (likely to be amended since the victim has not died)
  • Felony discharge of a firearm — shooting in the direction of a person, a third-degree felony
  • Domestic violence in the presence of a child — serious injury/weapon, a third degree felony

Officers were called to a home at 11481 S. Jordan Farms Road (3230 West) at about 1:40 a.m. Saturday after a frightened neighbor reported hearing gunfire.

“Officers located approximately 10 people at this location,” the probable cause statement says. Noting that Madison and the victim both lived there together for about two years.

“One male victim was identified with multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to the hospital. Officers asked who shot him and a male subject identified as Steve Madison told officers he is the one who shot the male victim.”

“Witnesses said (the victim) started a physical altercation with Steve, in Steve’s bedroom. At one point in the altercation Steve picked up a loaded firearm (.357 magnum pistol) and shot it at least twice, striking (the victim). There were several other people in the room when Steve shot (the victim), including an 8-year-old boy.”

Post Miranda, Madison spoke to a detective about what had occurred.

“Steve stated (the victim) was upset about tape and a message in his cell phone and had blamed him (Steve) for putting the tape and message on there,” the probable cause statement says. Steve claimed previously (the victim) had assaulted him in the home.”

No police records were found to indicate police were called to the previous assault described.

In the overnight incident, Madison said the victim came into his room, pushed him, and punched him in the head. A third person entered the room and punched the victim, ending the attack.

Madison said the victim later came back into his bedroom while he was sitting on his bed, and pushed his way past people and into the bathroom.

Madison said he grabbed a pistol on his bed and fired at the victim to stop him from attacking again. Madison admitted to firing two shots, the probable cause statement says.

Madison said when the victim fell down, he unloaded the gun and replaced it on his bed. Officers had found a .357 magnum pistol with two missing spent rounds on Madison’s bed.

The boy who was present confirmed he had seen the suspect and the victim pushing each other, and a third person punch the victim in the face, and Madison firing two shots from his bed into the bathroom.

Madison’s bail is set at $750,000.
