SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Oct. 24, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A routine traffic stop for a violation turned into an aggravated assault after a Salt Lake City police officer was dragged by the vehicle toward a retaining wall and nearly crushed Saturday morning.
The incident happened near Pioneer Park, at 510 W. 400 South, at approximately 9:40 a.m., according to a news release from the Salt Lake City Police Department.
After stopping the vehicle, the officer was talking with the driver when the passenger appeared to become nervous and then yelled at the driver to go, the news release states.
The officer then attempted to stop the driver from leaving, but the vehicle accelerated, dragging the officer directly toward a retaining wall, nearly crushing the officer. The officer was able to fall away and sustained only minor abrasions.
The vehicle was later located by West Jordan Police Department and was impounded. The occupants of the vehicle have been identified and the investigation is ongoing.
