PROVO, Utah, June 3, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A Provo man is facing 20 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony, after detectives allegedly found at least 100 images of child pornography on his cellphone.

A probable cause statement from Utah County said Bruce Marvin Quick, 56, was arrested Wednesday. He was transported to the Utah County Jail with his bail set at $200,000.

The statement said Provo police detectives executed a search warrant of a residence for an investigation of child pornography. While executing the search warrant, the owner/occupant of the residence, identified during the investigation as Bruce Quick, was called to come to his home.

“When Bruce arrived he had a cell phone in his possession he said was his,” the statement said. “His cell phone was seized at that time as all electronics owned by Bruce was included in the search warrant.”

A data download was done of Quick’s cellphone at the Provo Police Department, the statement said.

“Upon reviewing the data download of Bruce’s cell phone there were just over 98,000 images recovered from the data download,” the statement said. “Upon reviewing a small amount of the 98,000+ total images I identified 100 images of child pornography. The 100 images were of juvenile males approximately between the ages of 10 and 16 years old.”

The images portrayed the juveniles in sexual positions and poses, and several were engaged in sexual acts. Some of the images contained multiple juvenile males in sexual poses and or engaged in sexual acts, the statement said.

“Based upon the small amount of the 98,000+ total images I reviewed and identifying 100 images, it is believed if all 98,000+ images were reviewed there would be thousands of images of juvenile male child pornography found on the data download of Bruce’s cell phone,” the arresting officer wrote in the statement.

Quick was charged with two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child in 2000 in Provo, where he was a Scout leader and allegedly sexually abused a Boy Scout under the age of 14. Quick pleaded guilty to one count of sex abuse of a child, a second-degree felony, at that time, and pleaded no contest to the other count of sexual abuse of a child in that case.

“Most of the child pornography found on the data download of Bruce’s cell phone were juvenile males around the same age as the juvenile male Bruce was previously charged with sexually abusing, to which he plead guilty and no contest to,” the statement said. “This is a concern to your affiant and to public safety as Bruce has shown a pattern of acting out and viewing juvenile males around the same age many years apart.”

The statement said the affiant requested no bail or “a substantially high bail in this case based upon the circumstances including the large amount of child pornography found on Bruce’s cell phone along with the previous charge and conviction of sexual abuse of a
child mentioned above for Bruce.”
