PROVO, Utah, July 25, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has endorsed Provo Mayor John Curtis in next month’s Republican Primary in Utah’s 3rd Congressional District.

“In Utah, and Washington D.C., we need experienced problem solvers who will put people before politics. That’s why I’m supporting John Curtis for Congress,” Hebert said Tuesday in a press release issued by the Curtis campaign.

Herbert added the Provo mayor “gets things done and is a proven conservative leader. I have no doubt that John will be a congressman who will make Utah proud.”

“I’m extremely honored to have the support of Governor Herbert,” Curtis responded in a Facebook post. “His leadership has made Utah the envy of all 50 states. He’s proven that conservative governance works. It’s time for us to bring Utah results and values to D.C. and end the dysfunction there.”

The primary for the 3rd Congressional District seat will be held Aug. 15. Curtis, Chris Herrod, former State Representative and candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2012 and Tanner Ainge, son of Danny Ainge, are the three candidates on the ballot.

Fifteen candidates declared their candidacy for the Republican party nomination. Four candidates declared their intent to gather signatures, but only two submitted signatures for verification by the required deadline. This election will be the first time in Utah politics where three candidates will be on the primary ballot since two candidates, Curtis and Ainge, submitted enough signatures to qualify for the primary ballot and the party nominated a third candidate, Herrod, at its convention.

The winner will advance to face Democrat Kathie Allen in the Nov. 7 general election.
