PROVO, Utah, Feb. 18, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Police in Provo have identified the packages left along the rivertrail in Fort Utah Park in Provo and deemed them as safe.

According to Provo police officer Nisha Henderson, once the Utah County explosive ordinance disposal team were able to x-ray the items they determined they were not explosive but the mystery did not end there.

“The items were a fiber optic kit that someone would use for work, like Google fiber optic work,” Henderson said. “We actually called Google Fiber and the was name of another fiber optic company that was on the items we retrieved.”

Henderson said the company was able to track down who had the items last and it was discovered both items had been stolen out of a neighboring garage.

The incident started at approximately 9 a.m. after a jogger running near 300 N. Geneva on the rivertrail called 911 to report she had stumbled across two suspicious looking items.

“The caller stated she found a Pelican box- hard case- and a backpack, and once our officers responded they decided to send out the Utah County explosive ordinance disposal team,” Henderson said. “We normally do a removal process from here with different types of robots but due to the terrain where the items were located, we had our technicians go put it in a vessel and take it to a safe location where it was x-rayed”

Henderson said authorities are unsure how the packages got there but the incident is still under investigation.

The items have since been returned to the owner.
