AMERICAN FORK CANYON, Utah, Nov. 3, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Utah County officials believe search and rescue crews have located the body of a missing trail runner.
“A body has been recovered near a trail above Granite Flat Campground in American Fork Canyon,” says a statement from the Utah County Sheriff’s Office. “It is believed to be the body of Derrik Jenkins, missing since 10/31.”
Jenkins, 27, had been missing from his Pleasant Grove home since Halloween afternoon.
The Facebook page Finding Derrik Jenkins on Saturday afternoon confirmed his body has been found:
“***MOST RECENT UPDATE: 1:57 PM SATURDAY: SAR has located Derrik’s body on the mountain. He is no longer with us.”
Jenkins, an avid trail runner and the father of two girls, had said he was trying to reach East Box Elder Peak, according to information on the page. He was reported missing after he failed to show up at work the following morning.
“Please give the family space and do not come to the search area if you aren’t here already,” the notice says.
“THANK YOU for the incredible outpouring of support. Please send blessings and love to Derrik’s family.”
Plans for a vigil are pending. Check the Facebook page for updates.
Another post on the Finding Derrik Jenkins page added his family’s thanks.
“Derrik’s mother Kimberly told me to tell you thank you … that your support and the people, have been remarkable. Derrik’s girlfriend Kirsti told me to tell you thank you very much.
“The family wants all donations to go to Utah County Search and Rescue, on behalf of their beautiful son, Derrik Jenkins. Please contact us or Jen Manitoken or direct your funds according to the family’s wishes.”
