SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Feb. 7, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Roads have reopened after a residential fire in the area of 1936 S. 1300 East in Salt Lake City early Wednesday morning.

The fire was reported at 4:30 a.m. by the homeowners, according to a news release from the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

The homeowners reported they smelled smoke coming from their basement, and they feared their 21-year-old son may have been trapped, the news release said.

Firefighters arrived on scene within five minutes and put out the small fire that originated in a basement crawl space. The fire was estimated to be only about two feet by two feet, officials said.

“Crews thoroughly searched the home and worked with the family to find victims,” the news release goes on. “However, no one was found. It is believed that the 21 year old was not inside at the time of the incident.”

The cause of the fire, as well as the extent of damages, is still under investigation.

A total of 24 firefighters responded with assistance from Salt Lake City Police Department and Gold Cross medical transport.

The 1300 East roadway between Westminster Avenue and 1700 South was closed to traffic for several hours, but has since reopened.
