SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, August 8, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — At least one resident of a Salt Lake City apartment complex was injured early Wednesday morning after fire forced her to jump from the window of her second story dwelling.
The fire at 1620 W. Snow Queen Place near 1700 S. Redwood Rd. was first reported about 2:05 a.m.
A neighbor told Gephardt Daily he and his wife were awakened a few minutes earlier thinking someone was trying to break into their apartment. The husband said he went to investigate and quickly discovered fire had engulfed the balcony of his neighbors’ upstairs unit.
Seconds later a propane tank on the balcony exploded sending a ball of flame shooting into the night air.
The husband said he ran upstairs and knocked on the neighbors’ front door in an attempt to warn them before he and his wife were forced to flee for their own safety.
Moments later at least one person jumped from the burning apartment breaking her legs and suffering ankle injuries. She was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray in fair condition.
A second person was taken to IMC suffering from smoke inhalation.
At least 4 apartments in the 12 unit complex were destroyed. Eight others were damaged.
Residents who were forced from their homes were being attended to by the Red Cross.
As of 4 a.m. firefighters were still battling the blaze and mopping up hot spots.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
