RICHFIELD, Utah, March 14, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Richfield City Police officials are investigating after a skimmer was placed on a card reader at the town’s Maverik gas station.

A Richfield Police Facebook post shared information:

“As far as we can tell we recovered the skimmer before any information was stolen, thanks in part to an attentive store clerk. We have also checked with other stores in the area and let them know about the problem.”

A skimming device is usually smaller than a deck of cards, according to Wikipedia, and is used to capture data from the magnetic stripe on the back of an ATM card.

“As always check your card statements for any unusual activity and then if found report that to your bank,” the post said. “These card readers are hard to detect and are actually placed right on top of the reader, next to the cash register.”

The surveillance photo of one of the suspects is fairly clear; he is shown with dark facial hair, wearing a black hoodie with a black baseball cap underneath and a black sleeveless jacket. The surveillance photo of the other suspect is not as clear, but he appears to be wearing a neon yellow jacket, a dark hat and sunglasses.

“At this time we believe the suspects are of eastern European descent and from out of the area,” the post said.

Anyone who sees the suspects or has any information about them is asked to call the Richfield City Police Department on 435-896-8484.
