SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Sept. 2, 2022 (Gephardt Daily) — A man being questioned in  connection with a robbery near 900 South and 200 West was shot and critically wounded in a confrontation with UTA police officers Thursday night.

Carl Arky, senior media relations specialist for the Utah Transit Authority, told Gephardt Daily, two UTA police officers were “approached by an individual who told the officers he had been robbed. The officers, provided with a description, sought out a suspect.

“The officers encountered and made contact with a man matching the description of the alleged assailant,” Arky said.

“The 50-year-old male pointed a knife at the officers. One officer drew his weapon and fired in self-defense.”

The wounded man was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

“Neither UTA officer sustained injuries,” Arky said.

According to mandated protocol, a law enforcement agency apart from UTA must conduct the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, Arky explained on scene. “The West Valley Police Department has been assigned to Thursday night’s incident,” he said

The Salt Lake City Police Department assisted in the early stages of the investigation.
