TAYLORSVILLE, Utah, Jan. 3, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — More than 100 residents of a Taylorsville senior living center were evacuated from their units late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning after a waterline burst on the top floor of the 5 story structure.
Thousands of gallons of water inundated the facility, according to Unified Fire Department spokesman Matthew McFarland, who said 1 to 2 inches of water had pooled on the fifth floor and was beginning to seep throughout the structure.
According to McFarland, fire responders were called to the scene at 3380 West 6200 South at 11:38 p.m. after below-freezing temperatures likely caused the waterline to rupture. The temperature at the time was 15 degrees.
Firefighters, along with officers from the Unified and West Jordan Police Departments went door-to-door in the newly built independent senior living center and escorted a total of 115 residents to a main lobby where they were being helped by community center staff along with the Red Cross volunteers.
McFarland told Gephardt Daily the Taylorsville city inspector along with a disaster clean up team were assessing the situation, but it would take hours to determine the extent of the damage.
