SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Feb. 8, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — The Salt Lake City Police Department plans to file charges against the driver of a speeding car that went out of control Saturday night, leaving parts of his vehicle strewn over 200 yards of 700 East.

The driver, whose name has not been released, was taken to a local hospital in very critical condition, but has stabilized and is now expected to survive, police said.

Lt. Craig Gleason of the Salt Lake City Police Department said the accident happened at 10 p.m. Saturday when an officer saw a car speed by him.

“By sheer chance, he saw a red vehicle come flying by, about 100 miles per hour,” Gleason said Saturday night. “He just watched that car head southbound on 7th East, and it appeared to slowly drift and touch the median.

“From there, the driver lost control, and he impacted several different items, tearing the car almost to pieces except for the passenger compartment.”

The main part of the car came to rest at about 2600 South, Gleason said. The vehicle had hit a traffic sign and a tree, among other things, before it stopped. The engine landed near someone’s front porch.

“And that’s what we have,” Gleason said Saturday night. “We have 200 yards of evidence and a smashed-up car.”
