SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, April 25, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Sam Granato, member of the Salt Lake County Council and long time Utah restaurateur, has died after a two-year bout with cancer.

The Granato family confirmed the councilman’s passing in a statement released to the media Wednesday afternoon.

“The family of Sam Granato is saddened to announce the passing of their beloved husband, father, grandfather, and hero. Sam passed away peacefully at home this afternoon surrounded by loved ones. He fought an amazing battle with cancer for over two years.

“Sam has served on the Salt Lake County Council since 2013. In addition, he owned and successfully operated a chain of Italian delis and distributed fine foods to numerous restaurants throughout Utah.”

Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski released a comment Wednesday calling Granato one of her dearest friends.

“Throughout my career in public service Sam Granato was one of my closest friends, strongest champions, and trusted advisor. Whether a Democrat or a Republican, if you were in public service in Salt Lake County, you most likely spent time at Granato’s eating great food and learning from Sam — a man who could connect with people better than anyone.

“I will always be grateful that I found my way to Sam and that he chose to bring me into his family. Sam loved an underdog, and supported people who stood on principle — he will be missed by all who knew him, and his legacy will be cherished by many more. Rest in peace my dear friend.”

Granato represented District 4 on the Salt Lake County Council.

He leaves behind Ann Wyss, his wife of 40 years, four children and nine grandchildren.
