SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah, Aug. 4, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake County will be installing seven new electric vehicle charging stations at the Government Center, it was announced Wednesday.

These new stations at 2001 S. State St. will provide charging capacity for up to 14 vehicles, said a news release from Salt Lake County.

“With increased demand from employees and the public, the existing station was well over capacity,” the statement said. “As more people are making the switch to electric vehicles, Salt Lake County is working to fill the need for chargers in both public and employee areas.”

Supporting electric vehicle infrastructure helps reduce carbon emissions and pollution in the valley. Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson said: “Improving air quality is one of my top priorities. I’m thrilled that facilities management is helping ease the transition into clean energy for our employees and the public.”

Salt Lake County Facilities Management Director Rory Payne added: “This goal to expand electric vehicle charging capacity has been a county effort for the past several years. We would have completed this in 2020 if not for COVID-19. In an earlier stage of the project the infrastructure was updated to address future demand as well. We are excited to do our part to help ongoing environmental concerns.”

Consequently, installing these chargers supports Salt Lake County’s fiscal responsibility goals. Rocky Mountain Power offers a $1,500 incentive/rebate for each station installed.

Additionally, current charger technology provides integrated data collection and notification to users to manage electricity use more efficiently and accurately. The data will allow Salt Lake County to better understand and plan for usage and demand on EV infrastructure in years to come.
