SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 10, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City Police officers and the bomb squad were called to the roadway in front of the Utah State Capitol on Friday to investigate a large city trash can that seemed out of place.

“It’s just a little odd that it’s here,” Detective Greg Wilkins, SLCPD, said during the investigation.

“We had a dog actually sniff it, and there was no indication (of explosives) on it. We are going to have the bomb squad X-ray it real quick, but at this point we are not thinking it is much.”

The dog was correct, it turned out. The trash can was full of trash.

Police had been called to the scene, at 300 North and State Street, at roughly 10:30 a.m. Wilkins said.

The trash can reportedly was sealed with zip ties, and its placement, near the median on the road in front of the Capitol, caused concern.

The tweet confirming the can contained only garbage went out at about 1:30 p.m.
