MURRAY, Utah, Nov. 15, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A man and a woman are being sought by police after a bizarre rollover accident at the Murray City Cemetery at 5490 S. Vine St. Thursday afternoon.
Sgt. Kim Rees with Murray Police Department told Gephardt Daily the incident began at about 2:30 p.m. when a man and woman driving through the cemetery in a Dodge Big Horn pickup clipped the sideview mirror from a Murray City ordinance enforcement truck and kept on driving.
Two Murray police units responded to the incident and saw the pickup leaving the cemetery. When officers activated their lights the pair fled and police made the decision not to pursue.
Moments later, the pair struck two other vehicles near Vine Street and 5300 South. The pickup then jumped the curb and careened across the cemetery lawn, smashing headstones and ripping up sod before flipping onto its roof.
According to witnesses, the couple — whom they describe as scantily clad — ran from the scene of the accident and into a nearby neighborhood.
The male, was described as bare-chested, young, with long black hair, and wearing red pants.
The female suspect was wearing a black bra.
As of 7 p.m. the couple was still on the loose.
Alice Smith was driving the car hit head-on by the pickup.
“The light had turned red on Vine, and I see a truck … and it started getting faster, and I thought, it’s going to stop. They all stop — and then the light on the other side going north and south turned green — and a car went — and I think the truck must have bounced off that car and then ran right straight into me, head on.
“They say when you’re in an accident like that things are in slow motion and it’s really true because I remember thinking, they’re not going to hit me. Oh, they’re going to hit me, and then I just braced myself, kinda, because I mean I couldn’t move or anything, and before I thought to move, he had already hit me!”
A containment area was established by police and two K-9 units were called out from the Utah Highway Patrol and Sandy Police to search for the couple, but came up empty.
Rees said the truck the pair was driving turned out to be stolen, and police are examining some of the items in the truck that may help them to identify the man and woman.
