Shots fired call in SLC leads to 90 mph chase, car in pond outside Bountiful

WEST BOUNTIFUL, Utah, 0ct. 4, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A man believed to have fired multiple gunshots from his car in Salt Lake City led police on a high-speed chase Thursday night with speeds in excess of 90 miles an hour.

When it was over the car was submerged in a West Bountiful pond while the soggy suspect was taken into custody.

SLCPD Lt. Carlos Valencia told Gephardt Daily police were called to a neighborhood near 700 W. Jackson Ave. about 9:45 p.m. with reports of shots fired. Moments later, a Salt Lake City police sergeant spotted the vehicle, and the chase was on.

The suspect headed north, making his way through multiple jurisdictions with speeds ranging from 80 to 90 miles an hour. After about 15 minutes, the pursuit came to an abrupt end when the suspect’s vehicle ran off the road and into a pond west of the Legacy Highway about 1200 North.

Officers arriving at the accident site spotted the vehicle bobbing in the water. They then saw the suspect as he bounded from the pond and darted into a patch of tall weeds.

K-9 units were called in and within a matter of minutes the suspect was taken into custody.

Police investigators went into the water and recovered a plastic bag containing drugs and money.

Valencia said the weapon used in the earlier gunplay had yet to be recovered.

The suspect in the case was taken jail. Valencia said he’ll face multiple charges, including fleeing police.

Gephardt Daily will update the story as more information becomes available.
