SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 24, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Officials were called to Liberty Park overnight after shots were fired then several fights broke out in the early hours of Pioneer Day.
A person discharged a gun in the northwest corner of Liberty Park just after midnight, the Salt Lake City Police Department said in a news release.
The suspect was described as a black man, wearing a gray hoodie, who was last seen fleeing on foot towards the area of 962 S. 500 E. The suspect was not located.
Around four hours later, reports came in that there were several fights breaking out, also in the northwest corner of the park.
“Another report came in that a gun was involved but no weapon was located,” the news release said. “All available officers in the city responded to the park due to the size and defiance of the crowd. Order was restored once the crowd dissipated.”
Pioneer Day is particularly busy at Liberty Park, as the Days of ’47 Parade finishes north of the park and later, there is a large fireworks display.
