RIVERTON, Utah, June 23, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Two women who were critically injured in a six-vehicle crash at the intersection of 13400 South and Bangerter Highway Wednesday afternoon are expected to survive.

In an update from Unified Police Department Tuesday afternoon, Lt. Lex Bell said the women are in stable condition and continue to recover.

Bell said the accident happened at approximately 3:25 p.m. when the westbound driver of a black SUV ran the red light at 13400 South and glanced off three passenger cars before hitting an eastbound SUV head-on.

The impact drove the eastbound SUV into a semi-truck, puncturing its gas tank and sending its driver scrambling for safety.

Bell said the driver of the black SUV – identified only as a 30-year-old woman – was ejected from vehicle and unconscious when first responders arrived. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the eastbound SUV – identified as a 60-year-old woman – was also critically injured.

Bell said it was unclear how fast the black SUV was traveling at the time of the crash.

He said police will be looking at whether distracted driving, drugs or alcohol contributed to the accident.

There were no other reports of injuries.
