SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Aug. 8, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A suspect who fired multiple rounds from a vehicle then fled from police, immediately before a Salt Lake City police officer accidentally shot himself in the foot, has been identified.

Officers booked Quentin Austin Medina, 19, early Saturday morning for felony discharge of a firearm.

SLCPD Lt. Mike Ross told Gephardt Daily the officer was taking part in a containment effort about 4:30 a.m. Saturday in the vicinity of 500 South and Wright Circle when his rifle accidentally discharged. He struck himself in the left foot.

The officer — whose name was not released — was taken to a nearby fire station for treatment before being transported to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

A news release from SLCPD said: “Dispatch received information from a man indicating that his son had just fired multiple rounds from a vehicle. The vehicle was located and officers attempted to stop the vehicle at which time the vehicle fled and a pursuit was initiated.

“Officers lost the vehicle and within seconds of losing the vehicle it was located at 1309 N. Mandalay Roadd, where it had collided with a parked car and was left unoccupied.”

Investigators say the suspect was located at a private residence Saturday morning and was being interviewed by police.

The investigation is ongoing.
