SLCo Sheriff’s Office releases name of hiker, 80, who died after apparent Christmas day fall near Mt. Olympus trailhead

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah, Dec. 26, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — The Salt Lake County Sheriff‘s Office has released the name of a man found deceased on Christmas after an apparent fall near the Mt. Olympus trailhead.

The dead man is William Thomas, SLCSO spokesman Chris Bronson told Gephardt Daily. The man was reportedly found by other hikers.

“Yesterday, around 3:30 p.m., deputies were notified of an unresponsive male located about a mile up the Mt. Olympus trailhead,” Bronson said.

“EMS was able to get to the man, but he was pronounced dead on the scene, and the body was identified as William Thomas, an 80-year-old male.”

Bronson said ” the cause of death appears to be a result of the fall,” but did not have additional details on the circumstances, he said.
