SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Jan. 27, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) —  Police in Salt Lake City arrested a wanted fugitive Sunday night after he allegedly was found with stolen mail and illegal drugs.

Salt Lake City Police received information at 11:45 p.m. and responded to the Jordan River Trail near 1170 W. California Ave., says a statement released by the department’s public relations office.

“Officers contacted a person and found him to be illegally camping,” the release says.

Officers identified the man as 55-year-old Troy Olson.

“When officers checked a law enforcement records management system, they found Olson had active felony warrants for his arrest for drug-related offenses.

During their investigation, officers found Olson in possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, including a glass pipe with burn marks and residue.”

Mail found in Olson’s possession included an envelope containing a Chase credit card.

Post Miranda, Olson said he had found the mail, which was addressed to another person, adding, “he didn’t know that it wasn’t his because he picked it up with a pile of his own mail from his sister’s residence.”

Asked if he intended to return the mail, Olson “confirmed that the name on the mail envelope was not his sister’s name, and stated that he does not know the victim.”

Olson was arrested for investigation of two alleged counts of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, a second-degree felony, and one count of mail theft, a third-degree felony.

His bail was set at $500. He is no longer listed among current inmates at the Salt Lake County jail.
